Expandable Breathing Balls: A Simple Tool for Calm

Updated: Jun 10

Written By: Christine Ireland

Expandable breathing balls, often seen as colorful, collapsible spheres made of interlocking plastic, are more than just fun toys—they’re powerful mindfulness tools. Also known as Hoberman spheres, these balls expand and contract with gentle pressure, mimicking the rhythm of deep breathing.

Used in classrooms, therapy sessions, yoga studios, and even corporate settings, breathing balls help individuals of all ages visualize the process of slow, intentional breathwork. As the ball expands, users are encouraged to inhale deeply; as it contracts, they slowly exhale. This simple motion creates a tangible connection to breath, making it easier to focus and relax.

Children especially benefit from the visual and tactile element of breathing balls. It turns an abstract concept—calming down—into a playful, engaging activity. Adults, too, find that holding and manipulating the sphere adds an extra layer of mindfulness to their practice.

In a world where stress and distractions are ever-present, a small, colorful sphere offers a moment of calm and control. It’s a gentle reminder that sometimes, all we need is one deep breath—then another.

Try This Activity:

Hold the ball in front of you. Slowly expand it while taking a deep breath in through your nose (count to 4). Pause. Then slowly close the ball while breathing out through your mouth (count to 4). Repeat 5 times. It’s a simple way to reset your mind and body.
